HANCOCK LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES
FEBRUARY 22, 2012
Present: Mary Garland, Amy Markus, Laurie Bryan, Peter Ryner
The meeting was called to order at 1:00 pm.
The minutes of December 28, 2011 were approved.
The Treasures report was approved, with notice that some figures will be adjusted.
Directors Report
The Board reviewed some minor adjustments to the Personnel Policy and agreed to formally adopt them at the March, 2012 meeting.
Amy reported that the childrens programs were doing well. She also stated that InfoCenter software that the Library uses is increasingly not sufficient and will need to be replaced with something that has additional features and which is more properly supported.
The digital 'Nook' is now in circulation and has been well-received.
After further discussion it was agreed that the Board will meet on Friday, March 9th at 11am to undertake Amy's annual review.

Well, this is way cool...
Using knives, tweezers and surgical tools, Brian Dettmer carves books into sculptures one page at a time. Nothing inside the out-of-date encyclopedias, medical journals, illustration books, or dictionaries is relocated or implanted, only removed. Changes to Kindle Lending from Penguin
The 870 (best count) eBooks in our New Hampshire Downloadable Books collection published by Penguin can no longer be wirelessly transferred to a Kindle device. In order to read the Penguin titles on your Kindle, you will need to download the title to your computer and use the USB cable to transfer the title to your Kindle.
Please know that the publisher requested this change.

Leap Year Winter Reading Program for the Grown-ups!
Read, read, read library books (only!) during the month of February! Fill out a raffle ticket for every book you read and you’ll be eligible for fabulous prizes at the end of the month. How many books can the adults of Hancock read in 29 days??? Whoever comes closest to guessing that number wins a prize as well! Stop by the library to find out more. Ebooks and audiobooks count as long as they are downloaded from our library site: nh.lib.overdrive.com. We’ll be discussing William Martin’s Harvard Yard – join us if you’d like! Drop in for book club any month. March’s book will be The Call by Yannick Murphy – a very fun read. Copies will be available at the front desk. Funny and poignant without being mawkish or sentimental. I highly recommend it.

Kripalu Yoga with Margaret Gurney
Join us for beginning yoga with Margaret Gurney. A gentle, relaxing class – you’ll feel better afterward! Wear comfortable clothes and bring a yoga mat and a blanket. Cost is $10 per session. Register by calling the library at 525-4411.

Friday Foreign Film Fest
Join us for Reprise, another in the Friends Friday Foreign Film Fest series! From one of the producers of the Academy Award-winning No Country for Old Men (Best Picture, 2007) comes this critically acclaimed, postmodern Norwegian coming-of-age story. Reprise follows two aspiring novelists and lifelong friends journeying down different paths after one’s first novel receives wild acclaim and the other a pile of rejection slips. LAPTOP TODDLER STORYTIME & SIMPLE CRAFTS
Walking and talking, this toddler story time is an interactive program for all pre-schoolers and their parents or care providers. We’ll share books, rhymes, songs, finger play & movement. Our goal is to foster an early love of books and literacy. At the end of the program, there will be playtime for parents and caregivers to share books, puzzles, or other literacy activities with their toddler. Dress comfortably as we will be sitting on the floor in the Children’s Room. No registration required, feel free to drop in anytime.

BLOCK PARTY: LEGO® Fun for Kindergarten through Second grade
Join us for an afternoon snack and let your imagination run wild. Hands-on learning opportunity to explore how things work. LEGO® bricks are provided by the library. This session is for early elementary children. Registration recommended, please sign up in Children's Room.

TO BUILD A FIRE: SNOWSHOE HIKE
Join Harris Center Naturalists Susie Spikol Faber and Jenn Sutton and Hancock Children’s Librarian Rennie Timm for a snowshoe adventure! We will snowshoe from the Library into the wilds of Hancock, reading excerpts from the classic adventure/survival tale To Build a Fire by Jack London as we go. When we reach a secret destination we will build our own small fire, in the deep winter cold, and roast ourselves some s’mores as we finish reading the exciting climax of this story. Bring a headlamp or flashlight for this reading adventure as we will be returning to the library in the dark. Program for Middle School Aged Children. Call the Library at 525-4411 to register. Co-sponsored with the Harris Center for Conservation. Free. Let us know if you need to borrow a pair of snowshoes. We have plenty available.
