Library Events for February 2011

Winter Reading Program for the Grown-ups!

The children get their reading program in the summer, now it’s time for the grown-ups to have a turn. So here’s a little motivation to keep that winter reading going! Fill out a raffle ticket for every Hancock Town Library book you (adults over 18) check out and read during the month of February. (Books must be at least 100 pages and yes, audio books count.) The more books you read/listen to, the better your chance of winning our fabulous prizes! Prizes include gift certificates to the following local businesses: the Hancock Inn, Fiddleheads, and Dottie Cullinane’s New-Life Massage & Bodywork. Drawing will be Monday February 28th. In February of 2010, 783 copies of non-juvenile books/audio books circulated. Think we can reach 1,000 this February? Perhaps the library director’s hair will turn another color if we reach that goal!

Please note that since Jeannette did not carry a camera with her, there are no photographs to accompany this presentation. Library Trustee Minutes 12.22.19

Minutes Hancock Library Board of Trustees
December 22, 2010

Present: Amy Markus, Mary Garland, Laurie Bryan,Roberta LaPlante, Peter Ryner

The minutes of the November meeting were approved.
The Treasurer's report was approved.

Director's Report
Amy reviewed a number of Library-sponsored programs that will take place in January.

Amy reported that the Library now has an e-book reader. People will be able to request one of many free books available on various internet sites. The Library will download the requested book onto the reader, which can then be taken out similar to a book or a dvd.

There was a discussion about replacing the roof. The Board of Selectmen has reviewed the Library's request that the Town provide half the cost of this replacement, with the Library providing the other half from its capital reserves. Roberta reported that the Selectmen support this request and expect it to be included as a warrant article.

The Board then discussed the bid process, and it was agreed that Amy will attempt to get requests for bids into the newspaper in time to be able to open bids at the beginning of the Library Board's January 26 meeting.

Amy pointed out that the Library now has three new computers. The Trustees agreed with her suggestion that at least one of the old computers may be retained for use by people who use the computer for simple tasks such as reading e-mail, and do not need the more powerful features of the new machines.

The Board reviewed Library volunteer policies, with a focus on patron privacy. It was agreed that existing policies and practices are for the most part adequate, although volunteers must now be at least 17 years old?

The next Board of Trustee meeting will be on January 26 at 1pm..

The Rebirth of Cambodian Dance with Eleanor Briggs

After almost all dancers were killed during the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia, classical Cambodian dance and the Royal Dance Troupe were reborn through the efforts of surviving dancers. Hancock photographer, Eleanor Briggs, tells this inspiring story and illustrates it with her photographs of the International Ramayana Dance Festival at Angkor Wat in 1995. Ms. Briggs has been working with conservation organizations in Southeast Asia and South America for the past 20 years. She spends months in the field with scientists and local people photographing staff at work, habitat and sometimes wildlife. Her studio is in the Cheshire Mill Complex in Harrisville where she also has a small gallery showing her latest work. Free and open to all.
