In much the same way as we clean our houses, wash our cars, and rake our lawns in the spring, it is also a good idea to check out our family life and get a fresh perspective. The Grapevine Family Center and the Hancock Town Library are co-sponsoring just such an opportunity this spring in a three-session series covering the following topics:
Session One: "What Does An Effective Family Look Like?"
Session Two: "Is Anyone Really Listening? Communication Tips for Families"
Session Three: "So Many Demands: Managing Stress in Your Busy Family"

Poetry Day for Children with Read Blinn

Poet and Franklin Pierce College instructor Read Blinn will be at the library to read poetry and help children write their own. Open by application to children in grades two through five. Attendance is limited to 20. You can pick up an application at the library (they have also been handed out at the Hancock Elementary School). You will phoned by the end of March if your child has been selected.

Dwelling -- A Celebration of Home and Nests in Poetry, Prose & Music

Following up on their successes with the Flower Power Hour, Birdfest, and Walt Whitman's Song of Myself, Walter Clark, Jane Eklund, Howard Mansfield, Sy Montgomery, Julia Older and Steve Schuch will read poems and stories about homecoming,imaginary cities, beach houses, spiders, hovels and the longing to be native to one place. The readings will be accompanied by Steve Schuch, of the acclaimed Night Heron Consort, on violin and guitar. Co-sponsored by the Hancock Town Library and the Harris Center in memory of Thelma Babbitt. Not to be missed.

Mending Afghanistan Stitch by Stitch

Rachel Lehr is a linguist, feltmaker and photographer, and co- founder of Rubia, the Afghan Women's Handwork project. Each year she spends several months in Afghanistan, working and living with village women and children. She is a dynamic, informative and inspiring speaker at community sites including libraries, schools, and churches throughout New England. Through compelling stories, brought to life by beautiful and informative visual images and a fascinating collection of domestic artifacts, Rachel introduces her audiences to the home lives of ordinary Afghans. Her photographs and personal anecdotes illuminate the rich cultural heritage of Afghanistan in a rapidly changing world.

Third Friday Film: Breaker Morant

This 1980 Australian film starring Edward Woodward and a young Bryan Brown(directed by Brian Beresford) is based on a true story of British soldiers being served up as scapegoats by the British just after the Boer War ends in 1901 in South Africa. As Janet Maslin wrote in her NY Times review at the time, this film is "genuinely, surprisingly affecting." Always free popcorn thanks to Friends of the Library!

Special Showing of the documentary film The War Tapes with Barbara & Doug Bowen

The War Tapes is the first documentary war movie filmed by the soldiers themselves, giving a soldier's-eye view of day-to-day life in Iraq. The movie features a New Hampshire National Guard unit, including Iver Bowen, a Hancock native. Barbara and Doug Bowen, Iver's parents, will be here to talk about the film and answer your questions. Please know that there is graphic material in this film.

Friday Night Movie Cancelled! Delayed opening on Saturday March 17

This month's Friday Night Movie has been cancelled due to the weather. We won't be re-scheduling this movie (Cry, the Beloved Country) but we will make it available for circulation soon. Next month's movie, on April 20th, will be Breaker Morant. The Anatomy of Energy and Healing with Andrew Shier

This presentation will be an exploration into the field of energy and an understanding of the part of our anatomy that is energetic in nature. What is it? How can you access it? How can we use it to assist with the healing processes in ourselves and those we care about? How is it connected to simply living a more balanced and sane life? Specific consideration will be given to an energetic healing modality known as Attunement. Andrew Shier, RCT is a Registered Craniosacral Therapist and Master Attunement Teacher, has been a healing practitioner for over 30 years. Free. All are welcome.
